Lyme disease is named for the area in Connecticut where patients were studied due to the similarity in their symptoms. Once the disease was found, it took a couple of years to isolate how it was transmitted and what actually caused it. A bacterium, borrelia burgdorferi, causes the infection and is transmitted through deer tick bites.

The first sign of Lyme disease infection is the appearance of a rash in generally circular form (bull’s eye rash) that spreads rather quickly (erythma migrans). If left untreated, the bacteria can cause much more serious health issues, than a simple rash that will run its course.

For Lyme disease pictures of the bacterium and the bulls-eye rash you can simply do a Google image search for them. There are literally thousands of examples of Lyme disease pictures on various body parts to examine and use for reference.

The discovery of the disease was the results of several parents letting researchers know that their children were all being diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Tests were run and the joint problems were traced to being infected by the deer tick and its infectious bacteria.

Lyme disease is more prevalent in rural areas where deer live and roam. It is mostly concentrated in New England and the Upper Midwest. There are some areas of New York where fifty percent of the ticks are infected with the Lyme disease bacteria.
